The toolkit

What we can use in your portfolio

These are the tools we can work with. Whether any of them belong in your portfolio depends on your plan and what you’re working toward, and we only use one when it adds value.

Core portfolios

Low-cost, diversified portfolios built to fit your plan, drawn from a marketplace of 500+ models run by established asset managers.

Separately managed accounts

Professionally managed strategies held as individual stocks in your own account, such as AI and frontier technology. Used as a slice, when it fits.

Direct indexing

Instead of one index fund, you own the stocks inside the index, so we can harvest tax losses stock by stock. Best for larger taxable accounts.

Tax-loss harvesting

When an investment dips, we can sell it to book a loss that offsets gains, then buy a similar one so you stay invested.

Asset location

We put bonds where their interest is taxed least and growth in your Roth, where it can compound tax-free.

Private markets Accredited investors

Private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure, and pre-IPO companies, held alongside everything else. Only for eligible investors, and only when the lockup fits your plan.

Our philosophy

How your money is invested should be boring, and that is the point.

We build your portfolio to fit your plan, then keep it on track as markets move and life changes. That means rebalancing, managing taxes, putting each holding in the right type of account, and handling deposits and withdrawals. Markets will drop, sometimes hard, so we plan for downturns before they show up. We manage your accounts with full discretion, which lets us rebalance and harvest tax losses while prices are down without waiting on a phone call. Our energy goes to what we can control, like costs, taxes, and keeping you invested. That's how we help build wealth in a sustainable way.

Built around you

Your goals, your timeline, and how much risk fits your life. As life changes, the portfolio changes with it.

Simple on purpose

Simple portfolios are easier to stick with. We add complexity only when it earns its keep.

Taxes at every step

Where you hold something can matter as much as what you hold. More of the return stays with you.

A steady hand

The biggest returns are often lost to panic and chasing. Keeping you invested is a big part of the job.

Common questions

Do you manage investments, or just give advice?+

We do both, and they're connected. Your financial plan sets what the money needs to do, and we invest and manage your accounts to match it. Most portfolios are built on low-cost, diversified funds. The ongoing work is where we spend our time: rebalancing, harvesting tax losses when it helps, placing each holding in the right type of account, and handling deposits and withdrawals as your life changes.

How do you invest client money?+

We start with your plan: when you'll need the money, how much, and for what. From there we build a diversified portfolio, usually on low-cost core holdings, and add tools like direct indexing or separately managed accounts only when they fit.

Should I invest on my own or hire an advisor?+

If you have the time, the temperament, and the tax knowledge, doing it yourself can work. Many people value having a coordinated plan, tax-aware management, and a steady hand in downturns. We'll tell you on the intro call whether we think we'd add enough value for your situation.

Are you fee-only, and does that matter for investing?+

Yes. Our only pay is the fee you pay us, a percentage of the assets we manage. We don't earn commissions or have products to sell, so the investments we choose for you don't change what we make. Our full fee schedule is in our Form ADV.

Do you help lower the taxes on my investments?+

Yes. We place assets across your accounts to reduce taxes, harvest losses when it helps, and coordinate investing with your broader tax plan, so more of your return stays with you.

Can you manage my investments if I am not in Ohio?+

Yes. We are based in Columbus and manage investments for clients nationwide, virtually. Fee-only and fiduciary means the approach is the same wherever you live.

Who holds my money?+

Your accounts are in your name at Altruist Financial LLC, an independent custodian and member of FINRA/SIPC that is not affiliated with us. We manage the accounts. We never hold your money, and you can log in and see everything any time.

What is direct indexing?+

Instead of buying one index fund, you own the individual stocks inside the index. That lets us harvest tax losses one stock at a time. We use it selectively, mostly for larger taxable accounts, and results vary with markets, cash flows, and tax rates.

Can I invest in private equity or pre-IPO companies?+

If you are an accredited investor and it fits your plan, yes. We can access private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure, and pre-IPO funds through the same platform as the rest of your accounts. These investments are illiquid and speculative, can lock your money up for years, and can lose all of their value, so they are a small piece of a plan when they are used at all.

Let's build an investment plan around your life.

Bring your accounts and your questions to a relaxed intro call with Nick, Shane, or both. No obligation to move anything.

Portal, app, and account screens are illustrations with made-up numbers, modeled on the Altruist client experience. They don’t represent an actual client, account, or performance. Cash yields vary and can change. Direct indexing and tax-loss harvesting can cause returns to differ from the index, depend on market moves, cash flows, and tax rates, and aren’t right for every account. Alternative and pre-IPO investments are speculative and illiquid, are available only to eligible investors, and can lose all of their value.
